Library Expansion

On Wednesday, April 28, 2010, the Board of Trustees of the Schoolcraft Community Library voted to move forward with a long-anticipated expansion program at its current location, 330 North Centre Street in the village. This followed a two-year feasibility study during which the board closely evaluated the growing needs of the community along with the growing usage of the library.

Why expand the library?

Computer usage, program attendance and circulation have all been growing consistently. The patronage has quadrupled and the computer usage has tripled in the past few years. More and more space has been required for shelving, which has greatly compromised the library’s ability to provide adequate space for programming. In addition, the parking situation has become increasingly difficult.

The expansion will include an addition to the existing library and a new parking lot. The expansion will take place on the north and east sides of the existing building on property recently used as tennis courts and a basketball court.

Fundraising efforts

Because there are no tax dollars being used for this expansion, the Library Board is planning a Capital Campaign to raise funds to bridge the gap between what has been saved and the total cost of the project.

This campaign will include seeking funding through grant writing, pledges from businesses and community members, the “You’ve Been Booked” event and The Great Library Roof Sit. In addition, the library has been fortunate to have many wonderful volunteers who have offered their time and talents to move this project forward.

You can also donate to the expansion project via Paypal or purchase a personalized brick in our new entry.

Groundbreaking for the project is expected to take place in the Spring 2011 and a rough coat for the parking lot will be laid in October 2010.
